pretty words

as the semester slowly makes its way over the hill i begin to wonder -- what have i learned?
i notice that my peers' vocabulary...even from the ones who would never say nor text words that were not found in MY First Dic-tion-ary started using fancy words with French origins.

What is my writing class doing? I guess I'm just too busy reading old texts describing ancient buildings and getting embarassed that I can't distinguish a trigylph from a philaster.

Yes. I am bitter...and under -learned.

I Want to Get My Money's Worth

My earlier question on the conference: (the only question posted on the conference -forum)
I know that the presence of triglyphs is a characteristic of the Doric order --- but can I conclude that our library , though it may follow the ionic order has triglyphs?

John G. Rhodes writes:
In response to a couple questions I've received: folks, there's plenty of material online and in Stokstad and on Reserve in the Art Library for you (like any other Arth 100 students) to firm up your knowledge of the Orders and their parts, which we've also reviewed in class. Some of you apparently need to catch up. (emphasis added by me)

My (pending) email:
Dear Professor Rhodes,

I would like to bring to your attention that I felt very uncomfortable of the diction in your response to my question ( and possibly to the question some other students emailed you about privately) earlier today. I would like to elaborate that I posed this question after examining the diagram in Stokstand and had a slight confusion. I was wondering if anyone ( including other students on the conference) could clarify my point of confusion. As a professor, you may choose not to directly answer questions and instead direct students to resources where they could find answers. However, I felt that your ending note compromised the safe space to grow and ask questions which the Wellesley Community so actively promotes. (AKA WHAT I AM PAYING 50K FOR!!!!!!!) I firmly believe that the online conference is an extension of class where there should definitely be a safe space. You may not have intended that your post cause such a response, but again, I just wanted to be honest and tell you how I felt when I read the email. I would like to talk to you during your office hours -- after class tomorrow- or any other time that is convenient for you. (I can meet after the Art 100 lecture or before class also)

Thank you for your time,
Grace
